I've used a 1974 vintage Vibroplex Original (standard model, gray base) since
it was new, 29 years ago. It has one big weight, not two little ones. It's my
favorite (you never forget your first love...). It works perfectly with K2
#2084.
I also have a 1990s vintage black-base Original Standard, and gray-based '60s
vintage Champion and Lightning Bug. The Champion and Lightning Bug will go a
bit slower than the Originals.
If you hear me on CW, there's about a 99% chance I'm using a bug.
In my experience the difference between the basic and jeweled
bearing/shiny/chrome/gold models are all cosmetic. Same for the narrow base models like
Zephyr and Blue Racer. (And because the narrow base models weigh less, they're
harder to keep from sliding around the desk).
My advice would be to look around on the 'fests groups, reflectors and eBay
for a nice used 60s/70s vintage gray base Champion or Original. The CW
reflector is a good resource, too.
The real trick is knowing how to adjust a bug....
