Several years ago I saw a picture of a 'ruggedized' K2, built (I 
believe) by a British ham.  He replaced the side panels with custom-made 
ones that projected forward to provide carrying handles that also 
protected the front-panel controls, and did various oher things to 
improve survivability.  The elegant design of the K1 and K2 cases lend 
them to this kind of modification (I don't know about the KX1).
