My workbench is a cheap computer desk with a hutch. I got a ground rod and
some closet rod hangers, cut the ground rod to the width of the tall part of
the hutch, and hung it with the hangers. I also used a ground rod clamp to
tie it to the ground of a wall plug, so it's earth-grounded at the power
panel. I touch it before handling static-sensitive parts, and it holds a
half dozen spools of wire (with lots of room for more) plus my spool of
solder - works out great. (at first, I was dismayed by how big around a
pound spool of solder was, being used to a 3/4" core spool, which I could
hold and feed with one hand - my new roll is too big to close my fingers
around. but strung from the ground rod, it's even more convenient than the
little spool was...)
can't help with the tension thing, but my spools don't make a mess - they
loosen up, but they don't interfere with each other.
