Dan, you are correct, the total resistance must be considered - and the IR
drop across many connectors can really add up. Use good quality connectors
(The Elecraft one is good) and large wire (unless the wire run is short).
I usually use 16 Ga. wire on the power cord, and getting it through the hole
in the black shell of the plug is the hardest part - I just use a reamer or
a drill bit to enlarge the hole a bit. One does have to be careful with the
'dress' of the ends to be soldered, and I usually put an insulator (tape)
between the wires for good measure.
If one wanted to use wire heavier than #16, a short pigtail of #16 would be
a good way to go - splice the larger wire onto a 2 inch length of #16 and
you are 'home free'.
