Not so secretly, the web page of the Air Force 314th Training Squadron, at
Ft. Huachuca, AZ, (who trains CW ops for Army, Navy, Marines, and Air
Forces); mentions 15 wpm Morse currently, but in addition to other
communications training they do. It appears that other Army units also get
their Morse people from the 314th, as Ft. H. is mainly for various
intelligence schools and includes other skills for satellite operations,
maps, computer maintenance, telemetry specialist, etc among the many skills
taught there. They also supply the White House communications people.

As I recently noted, there were pictures of surveillance receiving sites for
spectrum analysis and monitoring in six foot racks, and pictures of field
comms from satellite portable terminal consisting of crossed Yagis set up
next to digital radio with miniature keyboard and miniature flat screen
display. These have also appeared in some TV news shots from SW Asia
operations if you look behind the troops being interviewed.

There are some off the shelf commercial flat screens and miniature keyboards
for mobile use. These are being used for big city Police cars for mobile
data and dispatching, replacing or paralleling voice dispatch. When I get a
chance, I will ask a ham on one of our research mobile radio projects what
they pay for their screen and keyboard like this. Very feasible for PSK 31
type modes with the K2 Elecraft radio.
