The ARRL newsletter just had a story about the FCC monitoring facility =
in Columbia MD tracking a 20 meter "ditter," a guy who left his keyer =
keyed, in Texas to an accuracy of three miles. I gather they have =
remote controlled sites around the country but I'm sure it was skywave =
DF'ing. If you know what they sound like, you hear quite a few semi-LPI =
(Low probability of intercept) HF signals. They are typically about =
five chh chh like bursts at a time at a rate of about two a second. If =
you hear them and tune around you'll likely hear them again as they hop =
to a new freq. They typically don't stray too far from the best =
propagation frequency for their desired path. I'm sure there are true =
LPI systems out there doing a MHz or so of spread spectrum for the =
people who really care and can afford more processing power in their =
receivers but I have no direct knowledge of that. One of the reasons I =
bought my KX-1 is that it reminded me a lot of some of these radios. =
Considering how long this thread has lasted I expect that's true of a =
lot of us.
-.- Michael.
