Building a simple pre-amp is more straightforward than making an=
 ATU 
or putting up an antenna (at least you can do it in the warm).

I use a Yaesu MH-31 (left over from my FT1000MP) with a 1=
 transistor 
preamp that is now built in. It is  mounted on the mic selection=
 plug 
on the display board. Plenty of audio gain and excellent SSB=
 reports.

The parts (excluding the mic) about =A32.50, but then I had all of=
 them 
in the junk box.
