Don,

A 3 mA reduction in RX current would only translate to 10% longer battery life
if you never transmitted. At typical T/R duty cycles, it would mean only 1 to 2%
extra battery life, and perhaps not be worth the trouble. The 2950, which you
substituted, is a low-dropout regulator which is much more finicky about its
bypass capacitors. So I don't recommend that anyone make this change unless
they're equally finicky ;)
