Dennis,
You do not need the resistor with the HC-4 element. The resistor provides
power to the electret element that is used in the Elecraft MH2 mike - the
HC-4 needs no DC power.
If you voice sounds a bit high, you can probably adjust the FL1 BFO
frequency a bit closer to the filter passband - that will increase the lows
and decrease the high frequencies. If you have the stock OP1 filter
installed, I would suggest that you use Spectrogram (or another audio
spectrum analyzer) to view the passband and adjust the BFO so that the
'corners' of the passband straddle 300 Hz and 2300 Hz (set markers at those
frequencies in Spectrogram for easy viewing). If you know your voice is
especially low pitched, you could set the passband a little bit lower - say
250 Hz to 2250 Hz, but if you go too low, the carrier and opposite sideband
suppression will suffer.
The BFO settings in the KSB2 instructions are only a starting point. You
may have to adjust them for optimum operation.
Information on using Spetrogram to set the filters for SSB can be found at
the Builder's Resource page of the Elecraft website www.elecraft.com.

| Got the KSB2 built, installed, and calibrated (I think). I have a couple
of
| questions:
|
| 1) In the Rev C-5 Errata, it says if you use a Elecraft MH2 mike, you need
| to add a 5.6k resistor from pin 1 to pin 6. I am using a Heil BM-5 with a
| HC4 element - Do I need to do this as well?
|
| 2) I did get a signal report from a station that said I sounded a "bit
high"
| - would that be due to not having the resistor installed in 1) above _or_
is
| that because of the HC4 element _or_ do I need to do some more adjusting?
|
| Now all I have to do is wait 'till the K60XV comes out!
