K2 UHF Enthusiasts,
I have worked out a way of using the K2 as a UHF transverter base
and preserving the option of using the KPA100. The problem is that the K2
and the DEM TIK2 board require the K2's 10watt top cover for two BNC
connectors and--if selected--an RCA Jack for PTT. The battery switch is
used in DEM's configuration to turn the transverter option on or off and the
battery is removed.. Furthermore, the DEM TIK2 board was designed before the
K2 Revision B board and won't work as described in DEM's documentation.
The problem is that the 8T line does not go to the J13 header
without installing a new jumper on the K2 RF board.
In order the prevent the K2's finals from transmitting on the IF frequency,
DEM suggests that the gate on Q10 be cut on the top side of the K2's RF
board. This works fine if you never remove the DEM TIK2 board, but would
prevent the K2 from working with the KPA100
So...instead of cutting the trace, I lifted the gate of Q10 from
the PCB and installed a tiny switch. If you want to retain the 10watt
function of the K2 when not acting as a UHF IF, two wires are run from the
TIK2 8T line back to the gate of Q10 and R61. When the top cover and the
TIK2 are removed, the tiny switch is turned to "on" and the KPA100 can be
re-installed normally.
If anyone is interested, I can send them some pictures of the mod
with more detailed instructions.
