The space in between them is occupied (in part) by the Santa Cruz =
mountains.
Not tall, by west coast standards, at only 1500 ft (4500 meters), but =
very
rugged and steep. Narrow valleys contain small rivers that can (and do)
become dangerous, roaring rivers in wet weather.=20

Living in a valleys surrounded by the mountains covered by rugged =
Coastal
Redwoods standing 100 feet or more high, it's hard to realize that =
millions
of people live only 20 or 30 miles away. It's not uncommon to see 120 =
inches
(300 cm) of rainfall on those steep slopes between November and May. One
winter when I lived there we got 17 inches (43 cm) of rain in 12 hours.
That storm in January of 1981 killed dozens of people in massive slides,
flooding and falling Redwoods that flattened homes. That storm left us
without power or heat for over a week - in below-freezing weather.=20

It's beautiful, rugged and sometimes dangerous country that ends over =
the
rugged cliffs on the Pacific Ocean - some of the most breathtaking =
country
any backpacker ever walked (or operated portable from).=20

Gee .. makes Wayne and Eric sound like John Muir or some such. And I=20
thought Aptos was by the sea and Aptos-North was on the Peninsula. What =

mountain?
