Don't know if this helps you, but I use a xytronic temperature controlled
station. 24vdc so it will be protected from transient spikes
etc and has a temp range of 150c to 450c +/- 5c
Tip to Earth res    < 0.4ohms
Heater Insulation  >100M ohms
Tip Leakage        < 2mv

Temperature control is provided by a slider on the station (rather than by
switching tips) which also provides the 24v supply used by the iron. I thin=

it's great and my soldering has improved 5x since using it (I can now solde=

a joint in 1-2secs !).

The killer for me was that it cost =A350 (so I guess $50 from a US supplier) =
-
a lot less that the >=A3130 for a Weller.
