Lyle, thanks, makes sense. Still I do have adjacent band ie: me on 20m CW, nearby station on 15m CW causing QRM. I'm concerned that during FD, I'll get wiped out by the other station on different bands.Rich

The mod is for *on frequency* strong signals. In other words, tune in
another station whose antenna is next to yours and who is running some
power - the kind of signal that pegs your s-meter and makes your ears hurt.
In this case, the distortion of that really strong signal will be reduced
and it will sound normal. Loud, but normal.

This is really for the HF pack guys who net on one frequency and stroll
around the same hamfest :-)

It has no effect on nearby stations (QRM), only on ones you have tuned in.
