For the question on which side of transistors is the emitter or collector:

The plastic types can vary, so the instructions tell you to orient the
transistor at any particular spot the same as the silk screen outline on the
boards.   The plastic ones have a flat, and round the rest of the way
around.  This is clearly shown on the silk screen and ensures your getting
the collector and emitter into the right holes.
