I think we have to be VERY careful here...Regardless of the good
intentions of most hams, there is always that one bad apple who incurs
the wrath of someone else by abusing a priviledge...We don't want to
force IARU and the FCC to have to step in and take a stand...We have
enough regulation as it is, and we would be well advised to avoid
anything that might stir things up...A gentleman's agreement is a
gentleman's agreement...I think we should stick by it and avoid any hint
of impropriety by reading something into it, for what ever reason, simply
because the language is not clear..Just my worthless opinion...

Really! Be careful with what you say people. Remember the rule of
thumb:
don't
say anything in email that you wouldn't say to the person's face. I
could
be wrong
but I don't think this conversation would have gone the way it did if
people
had
been talking face-to-face...

Now for my two cents for the contest v. award question...

Seems to me to be an award, not even a shade of gray to it. Here's my
responses
to the arguments people have posted:

1. Runs for a limited time period. ARRL has done this with the DXCC and
WAS
awards. There are awards from other organizations that are time limited
as
well.

2. Awards the top three. Sounds like the DXCC top of the honor roll
except
they're honoring the top three places instead of just first place.
Remember, they're
also giving awards to anyone who makes simple DXCC.

Ok, I'm off the soap box now and won't be responding to anything further
on
this thread.
