I've been using the D-104 with the Astatic element with great success =
and reports on the K2/100. I do have additional D-104 heads with the =
Heil elements - actually two, one with the HC-4 and one with the HC-5 - =
but really don't like them as much as the stock Astatic - either crystal =
or ceramic cartridge (although I prefer the crystal). The stock =
Astatics seem to have a certain "brilliance" that the Heil mics just =
don't seem to match - at least in my opinion and the opinion of almost =
100% of those on the receiving end of my signal). Using the stock =
D-104, you will need some means effect an impedance match - and - a =
little amplification for use with the K2. If you have an amplified base =
for the D-104, these two items are taken care of (just don't use too =
much gain!)
One "old" trick to using the D-104 (without an amplified base) with low =
impedance input rigs is to put a large resistance pot (I usually use a =
1meg but 100k will probably work but without quite as much control) =
across the output of the D-104 - taking the audio output from the wiper =
- and then adjusting the pot until you get a good balance of highs and =
lows (these mics were designed to look into a high impedance and can get =
quite "tinny" when sent directly into a low impedance). Of course, this =
only works with rigs that have a sufficient amount of audio gain in the =
input circuit - and - the K2 is a little skimpy in this area!
IMHO: All in all, the amplified base takes care of the problems and the =
audio is spectacular! " 73 es gud dx --don N4HH K2/100 #2028
