[Elecraft] taking the plunge

You've had quite a few messages to date Andy and so I won't attempt to
guild the Lilly so to speak. All I can say is you are in for a
wonderful experience. The best advice I can give is take your time and
don't work too long at each building session. Check each part before
installation to be certain you have the right one. Some of the
capacitors, for example, can easily be mixed up in the dead of the night
(g). A good magnifier such as an Optivisor hood is a good idea as is a
decent, temperature controlled solder station with a reasonably fine
tip. Your work area should be well illuminated. I would also have a
static control device such as a grounded wrist strap and/or grounded
work surface. And you should have a DMM, but it does not need to be
expensive - - a Radio Shack model will do nicely and you may already
have this. I would also recommend flush cutters - - again I got a nice
pair at Radio Shack. You can certainly obtain more devices but I think
the foregoing will do for most situations.

You will not fail and you will end up with a fantastic radio. The folks
on this list include some very knowledgeable people who will freely help
with any needed advice and answers. And Elecraft is just wonderful with
support. Once you hear that quiet, sensitive receiver with the perfect
QSK you will be hooked. I predict it will take no more than one QSO to
demonstrate what K2 owners have been raving about.

Subject: [Elecraft] taking the plunge

This morning I called Elecraft and ordered up a K2 and noise blanker and
I'm sore afraid. This will be the first kit I will have built since 1971
when I put together an Eico stereo amp so I could listen to my Santana
records.
Hope this wasn't a foolish thing to do, but with all the guys I've been
working on 40 meter cw raving about their K2s, I was powerless to
resist. Wish me luck, guys.
