I have a Timewave DSP 59+ unit, and the delay is small enough to not 
interfere (much) with my sending.  Any outboard unit needs a bypass if 
the sidetone is outside of the filter's passband.  However, the Elecraft 
unit plugs in BEFORE the sidetone injection, so the sidetone will sound 
exactly the same as it would without the filter installed.
