Passing a signal through a linear device should not increase its bandwidth;
passing it through a non-linear device usually does.

Most passive parts are linear, or at least have a large linear dynmaic range
(wire, resistors, capacitors, inductors).  Other are either typically
non-linear (diodes) or may have somewhat limited linear dynamic range, or
may have spurious responses or modes when excited by a signal (crystals).
