In a private e-mail, Tony Wells told me that he also had a birdie at
~28679.  Well, I don't have that one, but I have one at ~28696.70 with
exactly the same characteristics as the one at ~28707.10.

1) As you tune across it, it appears  to be about 10x the normal tuning
rate.

2) It shifts downward in frequency with narrower filter settings
regardless of mode.

3) No "microphonics" on it when tapping the case.

The exact frequency difference in the two birdies is 10.4 kHz (+/- 5.2
kHz from ~28701.90 kHz).  Perhaps this is a clue to their source.
