No argument there, and if I hear a rough signal I'll say a lot more than
"T-6" or "C" or whatever. I'll explain in plain English that the signal
has noticeable hum or chirp or clicks or whatever.
My point was that the old RST system was devised on the assumption that
MOST signals had some sort of hum, chirp, key clicks, etc. The RST
report was to tell the operator how bad they were judged to be as a real
help in constantly improving signal quality in the 1920's and 30's.
The RST system wasn't used commercially because such problems were very
rare in commercial circuits, but I can assure you that if an aircraft,
shipboard or coastal station started exhibiting strange chirps, burps or
hums, everyone working them would report it immediately. I think that
our standards on the Ham bands are at an equal level of quality today
and, should a signal exhibit a noticeable problem, it would be reported
immediately.

I'd sure care Ron (if you'll allow me to offer an opposing view). If
I'm
putting
out trash over the airwaves, I want to be told about it so I can correct
it.
Without a 2nd radio in some shacks for monitoring , how would someone
know they're tone is raspy (not to mention getting something in the mail
from an Official Observer indicating I need to clean my signal up). We
rely on other amateurs to make us aware of problems and it won't hurt my
feelings one bit to be made aware of a problem with my station. In
fact, I encourage it. OO cards are not something I'd like to collect.
