[Elecraft] K2 Remote via the Internet

Cool. The other way is to connect the k2 to a serial port on your
router ('course, my router's a slackware box :) [you'll need a com
port-to-IP-port program, but there's a bunch of these out there for
linux]. Then create an SSH tunnel / VPN between yonder PC and your
router. Port 22 (ssh) and whatever the ports that VPN / IPSEC use (ah
forgit) are usually passed through firewalls without too much
interference.

Then the only traffic moving over the internet is the serial com port
data to and from the K2 -- all the graphics are contained at the remote
PC (where you'll also need a port redirector). ANd it's encrypted!

These com port redirectors used to be free for windows -- networking
software shops'd give em away with their software. Now you gotta pay,
unfortunately. I purchased the Lantronix com port redirector. If the
K2Remote software can be configured to talk to an IP/port combination
instead of a serial port, then of course, you won't need a redirector at
all! I dunno -- can it?

  I've successfully controlled a KAM+ and a Kenwood TS680S in this
fashion, though I only ever allowed connects to them from the internal
network so didn't do the tunneling and never punched a hole in the
firewall.
