[Elecraft] keying circuit differences between K1 and K2

I wired up a cable for my K2 to allow me to transmit CW via the serial port
on the PC, using a PC DOS package called "CW104.EXE" that drives the
the DTR. DTR goes through a diode and a relay, and back to ground on the
serial port, and the relay "output" pins go to the key input on the rig.
This works fine on the K2, but when I tried the same setup on the K1, the
dots work fine but the dashes come across as broken up: sending a "T"
sounds like "dit dit dit", or sometimes "dit dit".
I looked at the key input schematics for both rigs but I don't understand
well enough what they're doing. They do appear to be different. Any ideas
why this setup misbehaves on the K1, and what a fix might be?
And is anyone else actually attempting QRQ CW on the K1? :)
Thanks,
