As a general rule, you will come across several more pads that are
connected together because the components are in series.  The solder
masking is pretty good on the boards and you really have to work a bit
to create an improper solder bridge.  That is not to say it can't happen
(it can) but if in doubt, checking out the schematic before worrying too
much is a good idea.

Ah the sweet sound of relief. As you can likely tell I almost nothing 
about electronics and it hadn't even occurred to me to look at the 
schematic. I don't know all of the symbols but looking at it now it is 
clear what I am looking at. I will try to look more carefully in the 
future (both at the instructions, and at the schematic) thanks for 
your reassurance Joe.
