Ed,
The MFJ 259 will likely do a better job than the old grid dip meters that I
have used in my novice years. Make a loop antenna coil of 10 to 12 turns of
wire about an inch in diameter and connect it to the output of the MFJ 259
then couple the coil to whatever you want to put the signal into.
The basic problem is stability and the ability to put it on a precise
frequency. Back in the days when I was using the grid-dipper (which
suffered from the same maladies), receiver selectivities were usually broad
as a barn door. Todays sharp filters make the need for stability in a
generator more important, but OTOH you can get the job done with it. I
would at least give it a try in instances when I don't have a stable
generator handy.
