"Can anyone confirm that spacing and getting the wire through the
centre is the important bit, the windings being tight is mostly for
neatness
? Also, I was considering holding the windings in place using a splodge of
glue from a glue gun - good idea or not ?"

Hi, Edward-
The important thing when winding toroids is to get the correct number of
turns- remember that *each* pass through the core counts as one turn. Try to
keep the turns as evenly spaced as possible; unless the manual states
differently, cover abt 90% of the core. You can raise a toroid's inductance,
in some cases significantly, by compressing the windings to occupy a small
part of its core.
As for hot glue or dope, such products can also alter the inductance, and
they simply aren't needed. Put your attentions instead into the tinning
portion of the process as improperly stripped and tinned leads are the
number one cause of toroid related woes.
GL and enjoy the build!
