[Elecraft] kpa100 reciever

i plugged in the power on my k2/100.  no antenna or ground connected.  =
power knob all the way counter clockwise. af and rf turned up with =
preamp on.  regular noise (hiss) can be heard.  when i rotate the power =
knob up as soon as it hits 11 watts and activates the amp my noise level =
increases about as much as when you turn on  the preamp in the first =
place.  is this normal? turning the power back down below 11watts =
decreases background noise.
