  This method works very well.  An analog volt meter is better (or a scope 
or spectrogram), but a digital will do the job.  Just peak the signal.  The 
effect of large movements of the slug in the area of the peak will have 
hardly any discernable effect on the noise, so peaking the signal is fine. 
When the slug is turned way in, there could also be a signal peak, but the 
noise tends also to be greater.  The very low Q peak near the top of the 
can is the one you want.
