Nothing beats having a proper signal generator to know if you have aligned
the K2 correctly, or indeed if the alignment has drifted off with time or
temperature. Many of the older type of signal generators are available for
little cost, they need to be of decent quality but age isn't so important.
For what it's worth, I had a Marconi 995 signal generator dating from the
1960s that was perfectly adequate and have seen them for 30 or 40 UK pounds
at rally stalls.
