You should be fine with the grounding the way you did it.

The reason that you ground on the right side is to provide clearance to
for the SSB board.

In the New manual (my K2 is sn 3458) they have you ground the xtals at
the base.

I additionally grounded my SSB xtals at there base and from the plots
on Spectogram the look good (Though it was a tad bit harder to do).
