Almost all SSB and CW activity is done with horizontal polarization, so
that probably wouldn't be an ideal antenna.

When I lived in Tucson, there were local several users of these modes. 
The activity level is much less than with FM, however.

It depends on conditions, terrain, etc.  A few hundred to a few
thousand miles, although moonbounce is not uncommon (but not with a
transverter feeding a Ringo).  Satellite communications is another
possibility.
