I had a very similar problem on my K2 control board 18 months ago 
(you will find my mails somewhere back in the archives). At the time 
I was told exactly the same - it is very rare, all boards are bed-of-
nails tested, you have been unlucky.  The cases continue to occur at 
regular intervals. It seems it is indeed not as uncommon as we are 
led to believe.

But having said that, the Elecraft hardware is of excellent standards 
and such faults should not distract from this. My K2 continues to 
work excellently with 4,308 QSOs in the log and no failures 
whatsoever!
