[Elecraft] Mods in General - Shield in Particular

I have been using my K2 since July 2000 (#1107) and am generally happy with
it.  Since adding the 100 watt amp I am even happier.  I have most of the
add-ons (SSB, NB, 160 Mtr, audio filter, matched crystals) and am going to
add the DSP module.  I have done most of the mods and have been pleased with
them.  Then I studied the shield mod and I can't figure out why it is
necessary to order a $15 mod to add three spring clips!  I have had zero
problems with my amp it was absolutely a snap to do and has worked perfectly
ever since, so I probably don't need the shield mod anyway.  Can't I just
buy three E980058 spring clips and drill the holes and scrape the paint and
add the clips?
If this keeps up (more and more mods) my little K2 will weigh 50 pounds and
be solid solder inside.
