Har! Tom!=20
Yes, you have to keep an eye on which VFO you are on when working SPLIT =
with
DX on different frequencies.=20
But, for 99.9% of my operating I NEVER touch the transmit VFO. The idea =
is
to be able to tune with the "big knob" without messing with the transmit
frequency in routine operation. SPLIT does that almost "brainlessly" =
(which
is how I prefer to operate). Since routine QSOs are almost always on =
the
same frequency (or as close to it as the other station chooses to be if =
he
drifts) one simply tunes around until hearing a station to call and then
punches A=3DB to instantly put the transmitter on the same frequency. =
After
than I can continue to twiddle with the main tuning to follow the =
station or
adjust the tuning for whatever reason without changing my transmit
frequency.
The K2 changes VFO's when I transmit. So if I'm listening on "A", it'll
transmit on "B" and vice versa. Like you said, it's easy to forget which =
is
which. I keep it simple and always be sure I'm on "A" when listening. =
That
keeps "B" as the transmitting VFO. I don't have to "remember" which one =
I
was using for receive that way. It really helps me operate if I don't =
have
to remember things <G>.
As you said, there are only two ways to change the transmit frequency in
SPLIT:
Push A=3DB, which puts the two VFO's on exactly the same frequency =
instantly.=20
Push A/B which switches you to the other VFO. If you were on A, you will =
go
to B and vice versa.
In the current firmware they made it even easier to stay on the right =
VFO.
If you press and HOLD the A/B button to "peek" at the other frequency =
(such
has listening on a DX station's receiving frequency before you transmit) =
it
will revert to the receive VFO frequency automatically when you let go. =
That
way you don't have to remember to poke at the A/B button twice.=20

To expand just a wee bit on Ron's method of operating... SPLIT, that =
is...
For those of you who will eventually use SPLIT mode to try and work =
those=20
DX stations (maybe even locals) who transmit and listen on different=20
frequencies, DON'T FORGET THE [F LOCK] BUTTON on your K2.
I can't count the number of times I've caught myself accidently tuning =
the=20
VFO I just set to the DX station's TX frequency, thinking I was tuning =
the=20
secondary VFO (which I'm using to find the station the DX is talking =
to).=20
As a result, I end up NOT hearing the DX station and NOT realizing I'm =
not=20
hearing him until I re-tune back to his TX freq.
