Brian,
You have it right - just bare a bit of the copper on the trace now NOT
connected to P6 (after the cut), tin it and solder the capacitor lead to the
trace.
One could use wire to connect to the other end point (far away?), but
why? -- the wire is there on the circuit board already.
BTW - you COULD bare both ends of the cut trace and solder one leg of the
capacitor to each and accomplish the same thing - sometimes it is easier
mechanically and neater looking to do it that way, it is a bit easier to
describe in the written words just to say 'solder to the pin of P6'
