[Elecraft] K2 power cord

Elecraft recommends #12 stranded for the power cable. They supply 5 feet =
of
it with the KPA100. I haven't tried longer lengths. Use a 20 amp in-line
fuse. If you are buying an in-line fuse holder, get a GOOD quality
Automotive type fuse holder!!
I made up a cable with a hardware-store fuse holder and after a few days =
of
operation I noticed that my DC power popped off and on from time to =
time.
The power supply was just sitting there putting out steady volts so I
started looking at the wire. I had the in-line fuse holder right at the
power supply end of the wire. It was hot to the touch. IN fact it was SO =
hot
that the plastic in-line holder was melting and stretching under the =
tension
of the spring inside holding the fuse. It was stretching until the fuse =
was
no longer making good contact, producing the intermittent DC supply.
That's what 15 amps through a pressure contact can do in the way of
producing some heat. A good automotive type in-line fuse holder =
eliminated
that.
BTW, don't forget extra fuses!!=20

Subject: [Elecraft] K2 power cord
A question in addition to my other post:
What is the recommended configuration for a power cord to be used with =
the
K2/100? I am going to be travelling with the radio internationally over =
an
extended period of time, so convenience is a factor. What gauge =
wire/type
of fuses (if necessary??) should I use in the power cord? What=20
is the maximum recommended length for a cord given particular specs? Am
going to make a radio shack run later in the week to buy the parts. =
Thanks!
