Rick,
How big was your loop?  No, you will not need a beam for QRP contesting,but
a loop can be TOO big.   Should not expect a 160m loop to be optimum on 10m.

site:<cebik.com>  Loop will hear EVERYONE.  We tried a 1050 foot around one
this year, and heard the world.  Worked HI on our 330 foot loop, not our
bigger one!  In fact worked KH6 on 40m SSB qrp twice, (different KH6
stations).

Conditions were bad compared to last year and years before that.
