[Elecraft] RTTY Operations

I guess I knew that, since I operated RTTY using an outboard receive modem
and a terminal program I wrote myself back in the '80s. I guess my real
question was why anyone using sound card software (as indicated by the
statement that the K2 works great on PSK) would care what frequency the
filters are centered on. As the K2 isn't capable of FSK, I didn't think
that anyone would be using an outboard TU with it, but I didn't realise
that there are units that can generate audio tones for transmission as
well.

Long before sound cards were even a glimmer in the eyes of the folks at
Creative, RTTY was normally detected with Terminal Units which had
fixed filters at audio frequencies. Additionally, in the pre-packet
days there was a fair amount of RTTY AFSK activity on VHF FM, in which
the actual mark and space frequencies were as important as the shift.
I retired my Model 15 and TU about 20 years ago, but I still have a few
of the ubiquitous 88 mH toroids (which were quite popular for filter
construction) around somewhere.
