[Elecraft] changing to yaesu knob

Well, I got the knob off the k2, however, there appears to be something
inside the yaesu knob preventing it from sliding onto the encoder shaft.

I probed around with a pipe cleaning tool, but haven't been able to figure
out what is happening.  It sounds like whatever it is is plastic.  Can
anyone give me any insight as to what it is, and the best way to remove it?
