One of the most interesting automatic tuners is used on the HF radios in
the Navy's Grumman E-2C carrier based radar surveillance air craft...The
E-2C has a trailing wire antenna...About 300 feet of braided copperweld
is stored on a reel in the tail and has a small metal drogue to create
the drag needed to pull the antenna out during flight...The antenna's
length is automatically adjusted in flight to maintain a match...If the
antenna jams and cannot be retrieved, it can be guillotined...Similar
setups are used in other aircraft...
