1. As I recall, in the early 80s. I think the Yaesu FT-757GX was one of the
first rigs to have one, though it came in a separate box the same size as
the radio.
2. Manual tuners usually seem to be able to match a wider range of loads,
handle higher power, and will often handle balanced feeder without needing
an external balun. The disadvantage is that it seems to take most people a
couple of minutes to tune them up, and apparently it's necessary to do it
at full power on whatever frequency I happen to be using. :-)
