The Orion's price will put it out of the range of many of us. But even
if I had 'infinite money' (as Bill Gates once put it), I'm drawn more to the
simplicity of the K2. Maybe I'm nostalgic for the old days when we built most of
our equipment and there weren't so many knobs and buttons.
Just a quick thought. I think the K2 has plenty of knobs and buttons to satisfy most hams today. In fact, the radio could have been simpler. I think programming a K2 is just as hard as programming a FT1000MP. I am glad the designers made it so open so we can tailor the rig to out preferences. I would say that a good axiom would be..."the more complicated the rig and it software, the more buttons and do-dads the rig is going to have."
American manufacturers in the 70s went to simplistic knobs and buttons...the Triton V? The Japanese had a button and a knob for everything. The more buttons and knobs, the hotter selling the radio was. I think that most American hams like to twiddle knobs and push buttons.
Your mileage may vary
