[Elecraft] Impressions of Orion and K2/100

I am not sure that this can be done anytime soon. The Orion is being built right now in the first production run. I too am interested in the Orion because of the concepts being employed with "new technology."
I am not sure that the Orion and the K2 are in the same class, and that goes for the all the other "DSP" type rigs. In many ways, the K2 is superior because of its "elegant" way of using known technology to make a receiver that competes with the best of them. There are no fancy crystal filters, no DSP stuff, no quadruple conversion schemes, and such like that. That's not to say the K2 is not a complicated radio...it is an "elegant" design.
The Orion promises to be a great radio. Specifications are impressive. I think the Japanese will sit up and take notice of the Orion. What comes out of the far east as a response to the Orion will be interesting. The Orion's receiver concepts are innovative as well and sound impressive. But, I would also like to see the Orion's performance in a real world environment such as SS or FD. Time will tell.
As far as I am concerned, the K2 is an impressive radio that will always be high on the list of receivers...not because it has the latest technology...but because the designers were extremely bright in their approach to receiver design. There are other words to express this such as clever, genius, inspired, smart, innovative.
Now, I will get off the soap box....

Based on the information available to date, I would like to hear anyone's
objective estimate of how the Orion and K2/100 would compare to one another.
I'm not much on the technical side, so I would be interested in hearing
what, at least theorectically, the average operator might experience as
differences between the rigs while in the shack. I don't want to create a
"Elecraft vs TenTec" loyalty type of discussion......I simply want to
understand what Ten Tec's combined crystal/DSP technology may represent in
the "real" world outside the lab. I'd be very interested in knowing if Ten
Tec's approach will have an effect on future Elecraft products....Wayne or
Eric?
Thanks folks and 73/Tim NZ7C
