[Elecraft] Digital modes - need clarification

I find that there is an increasing tendency in new "PSKers" to run more power. This
is sad because the job CAN be done with 25 watts most of the time. It reminds me of
another past era when all the SSB people then ran most 10 watt-20 watts rigs like the
Central
Electronics 10A/B and 20A rigs.....then people got "power hungry" and now it is
sometimes difficult to compete with a barefoot rig! I guess if and when this happens
to PSK31, I will go elsewhere to have fun!
I try to convince people that the fun of PSK is that it doesn't take a lot of power
or an elaborate antenna setup to communicate!
The second thing is "newbies" running overloaded rigs/sound cards causing wide and/or
dirty signals with many "sidebands" or numerous "spurs". Takes away all the
advantages of the narrow mode. In properly operated 25 watters, one cane see a dozen
stations on in a 1.5-2 khz slice of bandspace! Amazing mode only IF operated
properly. Lots of fun.

| I agree with you, Julian. I think the most I've run on my Kenwood rig
| (and it is rated at 100 W for RTTY) is around 40 W.
|
| But your msg reminds me of a singular PSK31 QSO I had The fellow, in
| Chicago, had a different approach: 500 Watts into a not very good antenna.
