Ron -- thanks to you and others for feedback (and reassurance!) on this.
Your comments make a lot of sense. Next time I run into a similar
situation, I'll try reversing the meter connections to see what
difference it makes.
Anyway, since my original message, I've got past the DC voltage checks
on page 30 -- and not a hint of smoke! Except from the soldering iron,
of course. <g>

When testing circuits with transistors or other active "junctions" in
them, the resistance you see may vary a lot depending upon the polarity
and voltage your meter applies to it. In those situations, the manual
usually shows the lower range of what you might expect in the "worst
case" meter situation.
