Exactly right Martin, you need a comparison standard dipole to know what you
have and an A or B switch, to account for propagation effects.  Also, HF has
about a 20 second fade cycle, so you need to take several observations, and
many QSOs to know what is working and how well  for either standard or EH.
Dr. Jeff Lindsey, my old high school buddy, noted that cycle in his
propagation research.   If you make a contact in the low of a fade, the
antenna may seem deaf.  But if you listen and average over several minutes,
things will be more standardized.
