A book about and by an old time ship's operator is "QTC, I have a message
for You" by Ray Redwood.  Unfortunately, it was a limited edition, and Ray
is a SK now.   He was a local here, and I helped him with his antenna work.

He had hoped to revise it in a second edition.   I urged his son to consider
doing a second, but we have not revisited the subject in a couple of years.
The revisions would be minor tweaks to correct typos; and a schematic of
Marconi's early equipment.  His son lives in New Jersey I believe, and is a
lawyer, so did not become a ham.

The book is possibly available from used technical book stores or old hams.
It is both a bit of autobiography of Ray's travels, and a fascinating look
at the shipboard life of a Ship's Radio Officer.
