Subject: [Elecraft] Build options for K1-4????
| Just ordered a K1-4 kit. Building it for portable and backpacking
| use.....mainly.
|
| What are your opinions on 17 vs. 15 band selection and the 80khz vs.150 kHz
| VFO range. Decisions, decisions.....
|
I preferred the 80 khz. option...Tuning rate slower...The 15 meter band best as
it is more active than 17 meters and can be used for 'contesting'.
| Also how do you like the internal antenna tuner option & what antenna do you
| use it with? I might add this after completion.
The KAT1 Tuner option is a "must" if you are serious about portable and
backpacking!
Saves carrying along another "box"! Will work great with random wire antennas. I
use mine with a 25-30' piece of wire for the antenna and two or three 33' "radial" or
counterpoise wires laid out on the ground. No need for a "feeder" in the open.
Band hopping is VERY easy once you initially tune up on all bands for a particular
location and setup. The transceiver 'remembers' the settings for each band so a long
"retuneup" isn't needed.
Hope this helps!
