One set of cans still in demand are the WWII era RCA Big Cans.  They are the most sensitive sound phones ever designed and are sought after by serious crystal set DX operators.  Properly impedance matched with a transformer they will deliver the lowest of signals.  They were primarily used shipboard to deliver orders to gunners from fire control and to the other crew.  If the ship was damaged and lines cut, a simple roll out of wire connecting the sets was all it took to restore communications. The Big Cans operated on the electricity generated by mike portion of the set and required no other external power source for communications.
