My copy of the ARRL Operating Manual defines "OP" or "OPR" as "Operator"
(Pg 3-14, "Some abbreviations for CW work"). 

Of course the ARRL does not make the rules for the world, but that's
consistent with my understanding of usage in the air in both Ham and
commercial circuits that goes as far back as I can remember.

I'm not sure what you are asking about "female Hams and Engineers.."  I
know a number of fine women Engineers who work in radio commercially, in
the past pounding brass on the marine bands and today in a variety of
positions where they might be considered as much of a "radio operator"
as anyone else. That was what I meant.

I thought OP was 'Old Person" the politically correct version of OM. 

I'm just curious, why "female Hams and Engineers?"  or is that only
female engineers?
